Jason Huggins
Doc Savage's New Year's Mix by Doc Savage
Jason Huggins is from Wilmington NC, but grew up around the US in cities like Indianapolis, Chicago, San Antionio, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Savannah, and Fayetteville NC. His dad had an amazing record collection but he wasn't allowed to play anything from it until much later in life, which meant that he heard a lot of Psychedelia, Classic Rock, Motown and Avant Garde. By the time he got his own boom box Electronic Dance Music had come into its own and years of listening to true artists play for the crowds instead of their egos made him realize that a hobby could be more than a great way to spend the weekend.
After years in Radio, in the publishing industry, and as a voice-over actor, Jason decided to pursue DJing full time.
Eventually, Jason learned that most people enjoyed listening to music with words and started playing music the average person actually liked.
Luckily (or unluckily depending on how you're feeling that day) Hip Hop, Pop, Rock, and even Country have been influenced by that dynamic, so Jason's tight mixing and intelligent set structure allow for dynamic sets that span generations, genres, and expectations.
"If you're going to do this professionally, you've got to take yourself out of the equation and be able to play any type of show. That's why I focus so much on the music itself - because there's amazing stuff in every genre and my job is to be whatever that crowd needs me to be. A dance floor isn't a piece of hardwood - it's a community, and we've got a few hours together to accomplish something truly meaningful. The simple fact is that it isn't just another show - it just might be the best night of somebody's life.
You can always tell when a DJ has grown up playing in the EDM community. We can mix for more than 2 bars, know how to build dramatic tension without having to resort to somebody holding a high E flat, and we play songs based on what's coming several mixes down the line. You can also tell I've been a working DJ for a while because I do things a little bit differently too - like watch the crowd and pay attention to what they actually want, take requests, and get out of a song if isn't working anymore.
The biggest lesson I've learned so far is one I learned a long time ago in the Boy Scouts - Be Prepared. We only get one shot at your event and the key to getting it right the first time is being ready for anything."
